Virtual Visits

Has anyone tried or had success with virtual author chats? Some YA authors such as Chris Crutcher and Linda Sue Park are offerring this as an alternative to costly school visits. I am considering it for our book club or an English class. They are very reasonable and I could afford to have contact with more than one author per year. I'm just wondering if it is an effective alternative. Thanks!

Our librarian, Allen and a 5th grade teacher, Kate arranged to have a virtual visit with Ann Martin.

We used Skype and both had a high speed connection and I think it went very well. The kids had prepared some thoughtful questions, I ran the camera (an external camcorder that allowed a variety of shots) and monitored the connection and video, and the Kate played stage manager queuing up the next speakers.

When Ms. Martin showed a mock up of her upcoming book the students visibly shook with excitement. The kids connected with a favorite author and Ms. Martin received some accolades from a dedicated fan base!

Wow! That sounds wonderful. Do you have the contact information for you librarian? I would love to speak with him about preparation for an author "visit".
