I'm wondering how many schools have taken their commitment to environmental sustainability to the point that they have appointed a single person to be the Chief Environmental Officer, centralizing in one office the functions that are more typically scattered among B&G, the business office, food service, and perhaps a couple more? I know of one, I think, but perhaps that was a passing thing. Josh, is this still what you are doing?

This sounded like a concept both sensible and cool to me when I encountered it a few years back, but I haven't heard much about it since.

Anyone have further info? And what is the abbreviation? Guess it would be Chief Sustainability Officer, not to be confused with an orchestra from a midwestern city.

I have a good friend at Newark Academy who is the Director of Sustainability. I will try to get more information about it. -Jocko McKean

My school (prek-8 day) recently named me Sustainability Coordinator. I've been leading the charge here for years. But I already have a full-time job here! Creating a dedicated position is an expense not all schools can shoulder. Has anyone performed a cost-benefit analysis to determine the average net savings with a position of this sort over a period of years? Akin to what you do when considering solar panels on your roof . . . How long until the savings cover the upfront costs.
