I have such a hard time navigating forums/groups/blogs/social networking sites. I understand the concept -- people write to each other and talk to each other in a group conversation. I just find myself getting lost -- I've visited places like delicious, but don't know why I would "tag" a site, or even what that would mean. If I want to go to a site, I just go there. And I almost never find anything very interesting to read in groups. Interesting people have interesting blogs, but group discussions often have stuff that I'm not interested in reading. I'm pretty much completely incompetent with a digital camera (despite everyone telling me how easy it is -- I mean, I get that, too -- you take a picture, and then you download it to your computer), and I can't do html, so web design is really out of my reach at the moment, and I'm finding it so hard to want to learn how to do it! I like to read and write -- I have no background in design, and little talent for it! I got a Facebook and My Space page, but I have about 3 friends -- my son won't even "friend" me because he thinks it's his personal, private life. And I'd just as soon write an email to my friend or talk on the phone as look at a Facebook page. I used Moodle with my senior English class last year -- they had to go to links to look up stuff, and they had to respond, and they had to make voice recordings of family stories, post them, and then listen to each others' stories and respond, so I'm trying. The work they did didn't seem as thoughtful as what they wrote when they were just using a pencil and a composition book... OK, this is getting way too long for anyone to actually read it all the way to the end.
Great question! I liked Ian Jukes' "digital diet" for educators. I'm hoping to have that hand-out linked shortly. Maybe we should have a day where the students walk us through their digital world :)
